Several hours seemed to have gone by in a flash. After staring at her laptop screen, typing up notes and reviewing old documents, a headache had started to form at the front of Bonnie’s forehead.

“Ugh…” she groaned, rubbing the skin between her eyebrows.

She texted Adam, letting him know that she had no intention of going to the study group that night—not with the headache she had now. It was definitely the sort of headache you get from sleep deprivation, combined with staring at a computer screen for too long.

“I might be dehydrated too,” she mumbled to herself, trying to think of the last time she had bothered to get a glass of water as opposed to espresso-filled coffee drinks.

Her phone buzzed a second later.

OMG – SLEEP!!!

She laughed slightly and let Adam know she intended to do just that. She didn’t quite make it to her bedroom, though. Instead, as soon as she closed her laptop, she felt sleep starting to overcome her. Moments later, she curled up on the couch and was out cold in an instant. It was a hard, dreamless sleep—just the sort that she really needed. One uninterrupted by thoughts or a lingering sense that she should be doing literally anything other than allowing herself to rest. Lately, every time she slowed down for even a moment, she would be overcome with guilt and anxiety that screamed at her to refocus and get X, Y, or Z done.

Bonnie must have been asleep for a couple of hours, because she was out until she heard the front door unlock. Her eyes fluttered open, and she saw Katie Lou returning from her late shift at the diner down the street.

“Girl, are you actually sleeping?” she questioned as Bonnie’s head popped up.

“Hey, Katie Lou,” she said, releasing a yawn and sitting up. She rubbed her eyes and yawned a second time. “Dang, what time is it?” she asked, her eyes too blurred to focus on the decorative clock on the wall.

“It’s eleven-thirty, hon,” Katie Lou said. “What’s the matter with you? Did you fall asleep studying again?”

“Maybe a little.”

Katie Lou tossed her purse down and came over, plopping down right beside Bonnie. “I ran into Eddie tonight,” Katie Lou said in a sing-songy voice. “He was asking about you.”

She rolled her eyes slightly. “I bet he was.”

Dr. Eddie Gale was a local forensic pathologist whom Bonnie had gotten to know fairly well. He was also Buster’s owner, which earned him a few extra brownie points from Bonnie. He was one of two men who had been flirting with her since she’d arrived in the city.

“What’s with the eye roll?” Katie Lou asked. “Don’t tell me you’re still mad at Eddie and James. They apologized and even took us out for sushi, remember?”

“Believe me,” she said. “I remember.”

Officer James Carson was the other guy who had shown some interest in Bonnie. Unfortunately, neither of the men had bothered taking a step toward an actual relationship with her, until recently when they’d realized they had competition.
